A Product Spotlight at KMK: Rooftop Toolbox and Storage Cart

This week we’re taking a look at one of the recent fabrication projects that we finished for a roofing company, a large storage and transport cart that will be used by roofers who work primarily for large industrial facilities. 

The client came to us with a design for a rooftop toolbox and storage cart that their roofing teams could safely use without damaging the roof or risking their equipment. They had several requirements for the cart’s design, mainly to promote safety and ease of transportation. For instance, the toolbox needed fork pockets as well as D-rings, so that it could be transported with a forklift or a crane, depending on the situation. The client wanted pneumatic tires to prevent it from damaging the roof, as well as an automatic braking system to prevent the cart from sliding away if its holder let go. And on top of that, it had to be functional as well, holding any important tools or equipment for the roofers to easily access. 

Our client sent us a prototype sample that they already had, which offered a good foundation for the final product. Together with the client’s team, KMK made several adjustments to the design that would make the cart more manufacturable, especially with sheet metal. We also worked to change up the brake mechanism to be more effective and efficient, as well as built the entire cart with standard-sized parts for ease of repair, maintenance, and production. 

Another thing we helped change in the design was the various panels that make up the cart. We broke down the cart into various panels that made it much easier to be painted or powder coated for improved durability, especially in the variety of environments the cart would encounter. The result was a highly functional cart with a simple automatic braking system and a design that allowed it to be easily fabricated with sheet metal as well as transported to and from work sites.
