Powder Coating vs Painting: Which is Better?
KMK has a large automated powder coating line in our facility, and we regularly powder coat our customers’ products to ensure durability and to provide a long-lasting protective coating. Naturally, we would argue that powder coating is the better option for the end-uses that our fabricated products often serve, but both finishes have their own advantages and disadvantages, as well as their unique applications, just like any other coating. Let’s see how they compare!
Paint
Wet paint has been the conventional finishing coat for many different products for years, and has evolved significantly over time into many different application methods beyond just hand-painting something, like using a pump or spray gun to evenly distribute it across the surface. Other processes like plating can be done to improve the paint’s adhesion and wearability.
Painting has its advantages–depending on the size of the part, the actual characteristics necessary of the paint (long lasting, high adhesion, etc.), and the requirements for any prior processing, paint can be cheaper than powder coating. However, it can get more expensive over time, as paints tend to be prone to chipping and other damage, and may require another process like plating in order to achieve the desired properties.
In terms of the coating itself, paint offers a much wider range of colors than powder coating and provides a thinner coat that doesn’t affect the tolerances of the parts. It can also be used to economically coat small parts in smaller batches, and parts that can’t be heated during the finishing process. On the other hand, paint tends to be wasted more, as it requires multiple coats to get an even finish and can be tricky to apply to large or complex parts. The process of spraying wet paint also requires significantly more personal safety equipment such as respirators to protect the operators and anyone around them. Paint spray is often harmful to inhale and the leftover paint has to be disposed of properly to maintain the safety of the operators and the surrounding environment.
Powder Coating
Powder coating provides a dense, sturdy finish that can withstand a variety of conditions, like high impact, everyday wear and tear, UV rays, corrosion, fading, and flaking. Its purpose is twofold–not only is it highly durable and protective, powder coating is also a highly aesthetically pleasing finish with many different color and texture options available, though the variations aren’t as extensive as those available in paint.
The combination of durability and aesthetics isn’t the only benefit for powder coating. It’s the best process for any size of component that requires a uniform, hard shell, and it’s also a highly efficient process–it produces less waste, and only requires one coat compared to wet paint’s multiple coatings and processes for the right properties. The powder coating process is a safe one as well, producing little to no harmful volatile organic compounds.
Powder coating does have some disadvantages. It can’t be used to coat materials that can’t be heated, or parts that require extremely tight tolerances that did not plan for the thickness of the coat. It isn’t always the best option for a small-scale project, depending on the size and requirements of the coating. However, the cost of powder coating is relatively stable compared to that of paint, which can get more and more expensive as coats and other processes are added to ensure the paint works properly.
